While Maine is most famous for its coastline, it is also home to some beautiful mountains. Bigelow Mountain is near the borders of northern New Hampshire and Canada. In 1976, the land was set aside as a preserve by the people of Maine. Bigelow is a 12 mile / 19 kilometer ridge that rises to 4,145ft / 1,260m and covers 33,000 acres / 133 km². The range is surrounded by Flagstaff Lake and Dead River to the north, west, and east, and Sugarloaf Mountain to the south. Click on the image for a larger view.

Common Ground Country Fair
The Common Ground Country Fair is one of the great events in Maine. Right now, we have two feet of snow covering our garden—it is hard to believe that Maine can be green and warm. But summer does come and it is rounded out with this wonderful gathering. We particularly like to see the variety of produce from around Maine. If you are in Maine at the end of September, this is something you should not miss.

Alpine Gardens, Mt. Washington
Just below the summit of Mt. Washington in the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire is a place called the Alpine Garden. A trail between the heads of Tuckerman Ravine and Huntington Ravine takes you through this rich alpine meadow. This image is taken from the top of Huntington Ravine looking south into Pinkham Notch. Garden Visitors
The garden is winding down from the intense summer growth. Plants and animals are preparing for the end of the year, when they magically disappear into some place that sees them through the cold winters. But yet, the pace is not hectic—there is still time to slow down and smell the roses. Click on the image for a larger view.
